Terra Incognita

48 x 24 x 36”, CNC-carved Arabescato Vagli marble, steel, aircraft cable, stainless steel hardware. Completed during the Digital Stone Project residency. 2016

Terra Incognita is the term given to "the Unknown Land" in cartography. This is the yet-unexplored portion of one's world. This work, created during the Digital Stone Project residency in Italy's Tuscany region, is an exploration of the feeling of stasis as it relates to finding one's place in the world, and in time. This work draws from the language of scientific observation, industry, and tension, and it is at the crossroads of ancient Marble carving practice and contemporary methods. Somwhere in the strata of geologic, art historical, and personal time, meaning can be found.
